months of planning, collaboration, and anticipation, the inaugural Lake Erie Odyssey is finally here. 

This Saturday, September 12, Waldameer Park will transform into something Erie has never seen before: a one-of-a-kind adapted obstacle course designed specifically for teens and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. More than just an event, Lake Erie Odyssey represents a bold new chapter in inclusive recreation, empowering participants to discover their strength, celebrate their abilities, and experience the thrill of achievement in an environment created just for them.  

At Barber National Institute, we believe that every individual deserves opportunities to challenge themselves, build confidence, and create lifelong memories. Lake Erie Odyssey was developed with that vision in mind. Participants will navigate a unique course winding through Waldameer’s iconic pathways, choosing their own level of challenge at each obstacle. Whether pushing, pulling, carrying, rowing, or simply moving at their own pace, every participant’s journey will look different, and every success will be worth celebrating.  

What makes this event so special is its commitment to accessibility and inclusion. Every obstacle has been adapted so participants can engage in the experience regardless of mobility level, whether they use a wheelchair, walker, or other mobility device. Course buddies, volunteers, family members, and supporters will line the route, creating an atmosphere filled with encouragement, determination, and joy. 

The excitement surrounding Lake Erie Odyssey has continued to grow as the grand opening approaches. From community sponsors and volunteers to participants eager to take on the course, the energy behind this inaugural event has been inspiring. The overwhelming support reflects a shared belief that meaningful recreational experiences should be accessible to everyone and that ability should always be celebrated rather than limited by barriers.  

Adding to the excitement is the setting itself. Waldameer Park provides a vibrant backdrop where participants will journey past beloved rides and attractions before crossing the finish line to a celebration of their accomplishments. Inside Rainbow Gardens, participants, families, volunteers, and supporters will come together for food, music, dancing, and community fellowship. It is more than the finish line. It is a celebration of courage, perseverance, and possibilities. 

Events like Lake Erie Odyssey do not happen without extraordinary community partnership. From sponsors who believed in the vision from the beginning to the volunteers who answered the call to support participants, countless individuals and organizations have helped bring this dream to life. Their investment is helping create an experience that many participants may not have had access to elsewhere and is demonstrating what can happen when a community comes together around inclusion.  

As we prepare to welcome participants this Saturday, there is a genuine sense that something special is beginning. Lake Erie Odyssey is not simply a single-day event. It is a celebration of potential, a showcase of what inclusive recreation can look like, and an opportunity for our community to recognize the incredible courage and determination of the individuals we serve. 

This weekend, heroes of all abilities will embark on an epic journey.
